What to expect
Alignment first. The complicated poses come later.
Iyengar Yoga is progressive – you learn to stretch and to increase your stamina in basic postures before you progress to the complicated poses. It is precise, with an emphasis on correct, safe practice.
You will start with standing poses to develop better posture and to gain freedom of movement and stamina. Seated poses, forward bends and twists are introduced gradually, as is shoulder stand. Backbends and head stand come later. Classes end with guided relaxation to calm and clear the mind and spirit.
If you are stiff, unfit, heavy or elderly, you may be taught to use supports or 'props'.
What the practice does
- Brings greater peace of mind
- Improves posture
- Relieves tension and promotes sleep
- Increases stamina and flexibility
- Reduces aches and pains
- Improves digestion
Before you come
What to bring, and when to eat.
- A mat
- A belt
- Foam pads, or several blankets for shoulder stand
- A yoga brick, if possible
Allow two hours after a light snack, or four hours after a main meal, before classes.

Plus a class calendar Sallie can update herself each term, and a way for a student to ask about a place without telephoning. Nothing on this page collects data, takes payment, sets cookies, or is indexed by search engines. It is deleted on request.
